🇫🇮 Finnish President Stubb meets 6G flagship to gain insight into 6G research

On Wednesday, October 23rd, 2024, President Alexander Stubb visited the City of Oulu, and 6G Flagship had an opportunity to present its advancements in next-generation wireless communications research. During the visit, President Stubb met with 6G Flagship’s Director, Professor Matti Latva-aho, and representatives from NokiaKeysight, and Bittium, to discuss advancements made in 6G research.

President Stubb’s visit highlights the important role of 6G and advanced technology research in shaping Finland’s future competitiveness and innovation capacity.

Professor Latva-aho expressed gratitude for the recognition of 6G research at the highest levels, noting that such acknowledgement is crucial for advancing the research agenda and securing continued support from key stakeholders. “Our discussion focused on how 6G technologies can create practical benefits for industries and society and that Finland’s technological advances must translate into real societal benefits, not just in innovation but in tangible improvements for everyday life. We also touched on the key importance of network resilience and the new opportunities NATO membership can offer for technological collaboration and innovation,” commented Latva-aho.

Launched in 2018 as part of the Research Council of Finland’s flagship initiative, the University of Oulu’s 6G Flagship is the world’s first large-scale research programme dedicated to 6G. The programme has produced over 3,500 peer-reviewed publicationsIts white papers outlining the 6G vision, key research questions, and challenges have been downloaded over 1 million times. 6G Flagship’s research is organised into four strategic areas: wireless connectivitydevices and circuit technologydistributed intelligence, and human-centric wireless services—each addressing societal needs for the 2030s.
