Verso Energy plans to produce hydrogen and jet fuel in Tornio

French company Verso Energy has made a site reservation for the production of hydrogen and synthetic jet fuel at the Arctio North industrial site in Tornio.

Verso Energy has already launched several projects, notably in France, to build hydrogen and eSAF plants. Verso Energy’s eSAF production in France is based on the company’s low-carbon hydrogen production and biogenic carbon dioxide captured from sources close to the plant, such as paper and pulp mills. The company will provide eSAF fuel for use in aircraft to help airlines meet the targets of the REFuelEU Regulation from 2030.

The planned factory investment is located in the Arctio North industrial estate in Tornio, where the aim is to create a green transition ecosystem, located a short distance from the existing industry and infrastructure in the Maritime Lappi region.

“We are interested in building a high value-added production facility in Tornio because the area offers high levels of biogenic carbon dioxide and excellent electricity infrastructure, which are key elements of the eSAF value chain. Tornio’s logistically central location offers top-class connectivity both by sea via several ports and by rail directly to the Atlantic. The existing business environment also provides us with potential customers and subcontractors who can help us to move the project forward safely and efficiently,” said Antoine Huard, CEO of Verso Energy.

“We are very pleased to welcome Verso Energy to Tornio. The planned investment will have a significant impact on employment already during the construction phase for SMEs in our region and, if completed, would create new opportunities for the whole region of Lappish Lake District. We at Business Tornio want to be actively involved in promoting green transition investment projects, strengthening the vitality of Tornio and supporting the growth of local businesses”, sums up Tero Siivola, Managing Director of Business Tornio Oy.

“Tornio has a long tradition in industry and these plans will strengthen the vitality of our region in the long term. On behalf of the City of Tornio, I would like to welcome Verso Energy to Tornio and together create a responsible future”, adds Jukka Kujala, Mayor of Tornio.
