AFRY is proud to announce the successful completion of the expanded Boliden Odda zinc smelter, a project that underscores AFRY’s commitment to engineer sustainable solutions. As one of the main engineering partners, AFRY has played a key role in transforming Boliden Odda into the world’s most climate-efficient zinc smelter.

Initiated in 2021, the Boliden Odda project in Southern Norway has increased zinc production capacity from 200 ktonnes to 350 ktonnes annually, while reducing carbon dioxide intensity by 15 percent. The expansion project improves plant’s energy efficiency, as it uses only fossil-free electricity and sustainable technologies in all production phases. The inauguration marks a key milestone as it is Boliden’s largest investment to date and one of Norway’s largest industrial investments on the mainland ever.

AFRY provided comprehensive detailed engineering, site services, and project procurement support between 2022-2024. In addition to extensive infrastructure being built, primarily for logistics and energy, a new roasting furnace, a new sulfuric acid plant, and a new cellhouse have been constructed. Furthermore, the leaching and cleaning plant and the foundry have been expanded and modernized. These upgrades are designed to enhance operational efficiency and environmental sustainability.

“We are extremely proud to be Boliden’s trusted partner in this strategic project. This milestone highlights the successful collaboration between AFRY and Boliden, contributing to sustainable development in the region. Our operating model, where local presence and know-how are supported by global competencies, enables us to deliver world-class solutions to Boliden,” says Janne Tikka, Head of Mining & Metals, Process Industries Division, AFRY.

Boliden is a Swedish mining and metals company with a focus on sustainable development. The company’s core competence lies within the fields of exploration, mining, smelting and metal recycling and it operates in Sweden, Norway, Finland and Ireland.
