A Letter From the Publisher

In today’s world of escalating division and biased information, one question is paramount: Who can the public trust?
We at Arctic Today are pledged to deliver news and analysis that is fair and untainted by partisan or national political ambitions. We cling to a vision of the Arctic as a “region of peace,” at least outside the borders of Russia. This cannot be affected by the emergence of troubling authoritarian rhetoric from the U.S. government.
As with you, we find references in the public dialog to “taking Greenland by force” or making Canada the “51st state” to be abhorrent. Such inflammatory notions violate the foundations of democratic Arctic allies. We join you, our audience, in pledging to help be a voice to maintain trust and friendly alliances among our peoples.
This backdrop is why I felt it was important that you know more about us than would normally be the case. I want you to understand who we are: Our writers, research and opinion columnists represent all Arctic countries. We share long-held allegiances to the larger Arctic region.
Our editorial team members have extensive backgrounds with well-known and respected international media. In selecting the opinion and analysis pieces we publish from contributors, we are mindful of balancing perspectives. And we take care to balance voices across regions. We strive to bring needed context to each newsworthy development we cover.
We try every day to amplify the views we hear speaking out on challenges and change in the Arctic. And always, we choose to prioritize our long-cherished belief in mutual understanding, collaboration, even friendship.
This is why we so appreciate the time you give to us as readers. We ask that you subscribe to our (free) newsletter, so that you don’t miss important stories each week.
These days, we have to accept that provocative political posturing and controversial policies will be a part of life for a time. They will emerge, fight for attention, be amended and hopefully disappear. But the values of honest debate and free expression are a bedrock of democracy and free speech.
Please join me in espousing the ties that have bound us to act as one, out of mutual respect and caring for this critical part of the globe. You can help in this cause by sharing the news and opinions that are important to you. The greater the spread of useful thoughts and information, the likelier that cooperation can thrive in challenging times.
Finally, I invite you to send us your thoughts and suggestions by emailing in**@ar*********.com. We will take them to heart.
