Decarbonization of the Nordic Maritime Industry: Nordic Maritime Transport and Energy Research

Programme Presents Results at Conference

Malmø will host the Conference on the Nordic Maritime Transport and Energy Research Programme from May 3-4, 2023. The conference aims to provide a platform for the three funded projects – HOPE, CAHEMA, and AEGIR – to present the results of their work and bring together industry, researchers, and students to focus on the overall goals of the research programme.

The Nordic countries are significant players in the maritime industry, with major ship operations, ship ownership, and thriving maritime clusters involved in various aspects of the sector. However, the need to decarbonize this hard-to-abate sector is becoming increasingly critical. The Nordic Maritime Transport and Energy Research Programme, with funding for three selected consortia, aims to accelerate the decarbonization of the maritime sector by fostering cooperation between researchers and industry in the Nordic countries.

The conference will feature keynote speakers from industry and academia who will provide insights and perspectives on maritime decarbonization. The sessions will cover topics such as global regulations for decarbonization, green ammonia-powered ships, linking research and industry for ammonia and hydrogen-based solutions, and hydrogen fuel cell solutions in shipping, among others. Additionally, the conference will include presentations of the three projects funded by The Nordic Maritime Transport and Energy Research Programme, followed by a panel discussion and deep dives into alternative fuels in the maritime industry.

“We are excited to bring together industry and research stakeholders at the Conference on the Nordic Maritime Transport and Energy Research Programme,” said Prof. Aykut I. ÖlÒ«er, Director of Research at the World Maritime University. “This conference provides a valuable platform for knowledge sharing and collaboration towards accelerating the decarbonization of the maritime sector in the Nordic countries,” say Ole Aune ØdegÃ¥rd, Adviser at Nordic Energy Research and Project Lead of The Nordic Maritime Transport and Energy Research Programme.

The conference will also include networking opportunities, including a dinner on May 3, providing a platform for participants to engage in discussions, exchange ideas, and foster collaboration among industry and research stakeholders.
