Danish FM: Superpowers can’t just take what they want
Speaking to Danish national broadcaster DR, Denmark’s Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen (Moderaterne) expressed serious concerns over President Donald Trump’s territorial ambitions, especially in relation to Greenland, following a crisis meeting with Danish political leaders.
“Of course, we cannot have a world order where countries, if they are big enough—no matter their name—can simply take what they want,” he said.
Trump did not mention Greenland in his inaugural speech, but later in the day claimed that the U.S. needed to “take” the island nation due to international security concerns at a press conference in the Oval Office. However, Greenland’s omission from the speech does not change Rasmussen’s evaluation of the situation.
“It doesn’t make me call off any crisis, because he talked about expanding American territory,” he said.
Rasmussen claimed that the statements made by the U.S. president have forced his the government to view of the situation with “deep, deep seriousness.”
Greenland’s Prime Minister Muté B. Egede has announced a press conference at 16:00 (CET) in response to Trump’s latest remarks.
