Greenland and the UK begin negotiations on a free trade agreement
Nuuk, Greenland, 27 January 2022: Today the UK and Greenland launched negotiations on a new Free Trade Agreement at a meeting between the British Embassy and Greenland’s Prime Minister Múte Bourup Egede.
The bilateral free trade agreement between the UK and Greenland will be Greenland’s first trade agreement. The Free Trade Agreement aims to restore the bilateral trade framework between the two countries that were lost when the UK left the EU. The UK is Greenland’s most important market for cooked and peeled shrimp and an important market for cod fillets and other fish products.
The purpose of the free trade agreement is to reduce or eliminate UK customs duties on Greenlandic seafood products when the products are brought into the UK. With the UK as an important market for Greenland, it is important to create similar good trade relations between our two countries.
The Prime Minister Mute Bourup Egede says:
“Trade between the UK and Greenland has created revenue streams and jobs in both countries. We are therefore pleased to be able to work to ensure that trade relations can continue.
A new free trade agreement between our countries will benefit our industry and be a steppingstone for developing our bilateral relations for the benefit of both countries. We are very much looking forward to the negotiations, and to exploring the potentials and opportunities that a direct relationship between us can lead to.”
