Greenland is among the best places in the world to visit this year, with a new international airport in Nuuk set to welcome more travelers eager to explore its Arctic landscapes, according to an annual ranking by the New York Times.
- New flights make Greenland more accessible: Starting in June, United Airlines will launch seasonal nonstop flights from Newark Liberty Airport just outside New York City to Nuuk, Greenland’s capital. Winter trips from February to April offer activities like dog-sledding, snowmobiling, and overnight stays in igloos, the Times said.
- Growth with sustainability in mind: Hotels across Greenland are expanding, prompting the government to bring in new laws aimed at preventing overtourism. Local communities have been empowered to manage visitor numbers, drawing inspiration from neighboring Iceland, according to the report.
- Norway’s Lofoten Islands also make the list at No.34. With a Solar maximum expected to continue well into 2025, the islands off Norway’s west coast are a good place to see the northern lights, the New York Times said. In the winter, near 24-hour darkness is counteracted by Christmas markets, while the endless daylight in summer make the islands ideal for hiking, kayaking and even round-the-clock golf, as Arctic Today has reported.
