A growing movement in Greenland is calling for a boycott of American goods, sparked by U.S. President Donald Trump’s repeated statements suggesting the U.S. should annex the island. The Greenlandic broadcaster KNR reports that a social media-driven boycott campaign has gained significant traction, with over 1,900 people joining the Facebook group “Boykot amerikanske varer i Grønland” (“Boycott American goods in Greenland”) since its launch on March 4.

“We must show the American administration that we are not happy”

Speaking to KNR, boycott organizer Minik Lange said Greenlanders must send a clear signal of protest against Trump’s remarks by refusing to buy American products such as Coca-Cola, Heinz ketchup, Lay’s chips, Colgate toothpaste, and Pampers diapers.

“We must show the American administration that we are not happy with what is happening right now. And we must protest against President Donald Trump’s statements,” Lange told KNR.

At a press conference last week, Trump was asked about a “possible annexation” of Greenland. His response—”I think it will happen”—has fueled outrage among many Greenlanders who see the remarks as a threat to their sovereignty.

A quiet protest, but a strong message

Lange describes the boycott as a peaceful, but powerful way for Greenlanders to push back against what they see as American overreach.

“We can show a quiet form of protest by being more mindful of what we buy. We might consider purchasing more European or Canadian goods instead,” he said.

According to KNR, Trump’s comments about Greenland are not isolated, as he has also expressed interest in acquiring Canada and the Panama Canal. This has led to large protests in Panama, while in Greenland, hundreds of people gathered in Nuuk and Sisimiut over the weekend in the country’s largest-ever demonstration against U.S. interference.

“We want to be our own”

Lange hopes the boycott will continue to grow, inspiring more Greenlanders to take action.

“Thousands of people in Panama began protesting against Donald Trump’s statements. I felt that was missing here in Greenland. That we, the people, also show the Americans that we want to be our own,” he said.
