The municipal company Luleå Energi has taken a new battery park into operation.
Batteripark
The battery park consists of six containers filled with battery cells.
For Luleå Energi, it is an investment with several possible uses and potential business.“Batteries play an increasingly important role in Sweden’s electricity grid and energy system and the battery park that we have now commissioned will be able to support the electricity grid, contribute to the energy transition and at the same time generate revenue,” says Sofia Antonsen, Head of Development at Luleå Energi. The batteries will be used to balance the electricity grid when production from weather-dependent power sources must be synchronized with the need for energy. The battery park is owned by Luleå Energi. It is Norrbotten’s first of its kind and is located on Luleå Energi’s own land at Porsödalen in Luleå. The park has been built, delivered and installed by Svea Solar on behalf of Luleå Energi.

The battery park, named Altilium, consists of six containers filled with battery cells that together have a capacity of 12 megawatt hours (MWh). This corresponds to enough energy to power a normal-sized electric car 1.5 laps around the world. Luleå Energi’s investment for the battery park is 73 million SEK.

The batteries can react very quickly (milliseconds) and either output or store electricity to balance between production and consumption. Batteries are mainly used to store electricity for short periods of time (a few hours). The batteries in Altilium are half-charged as a starting point to be quickly recharged or discharged.
