Research in Focus: Regional temperature increases are outpacing scientists’ simulations
This is part of an ongoing series where Arctic Today spotlights key research that should be read beyond the academic circles. Below is a brief summary by the research, followed by a link to the full report.
In a recent report, researchers were able to quantify changes of extreme temperatures worldwide over recent decades. This revealed areas where the hottest temperatures are increasing significantly faster than more moderate temperatures. In these regions, trends are largely underestimated in climate model simulations.
According to the researchers, these findings highlight the need to better understand and model extreme heat and to rapidly mitigate greenhouse gas emissions to avoid further harm.
