Shoes made from fish leather

Norskin recently teamed up with FOGG Gildeskål, shoe brand Kastel, and award winning shoe designer Ingrid Brandth, with a main goal to create shoes out of fish leather.
The project is part of this years Design driven innovation program at DOGA (Design and architecture in Oslo) and is funded by the program.

The project will help raise awareness towards Norwegian design. The shoe will be part of Norwegian culture and have a story that people in Norway can relate to.
The team
Inspired by the arctics Fogg Gildeskål is a Norwegian clothing brand that aims to produce clothes that last. High quality, craftsmanship and history are only some of FOGG´s priorities. Natural materials are a must for the brand, with a long history of wool,- FOGG are now looking towards other materials with similar values.
Kastel shoes is a fast growing brand with a main focus on shoes that last through several seasons. Kastel makes shoes for harsh nordic climates, the idea was to create something that would work as both a sneaker and a welly-boot, which they have accomplished well.
The Brand is now eager to look into more sustainable solutions for their footwear.
Ingrid Brandth is an award winning shoe designer with many years of experience, working with companies such as ALFA and Nike. Ingrid has a keen eye for design and has a passion for new sustainable solutions where materials and design is involved.
Can Salmon be the new Cow ?
Today most of our shoes or more specifically boots, are made from cows leather. In this project the team are hoping to replace cows leather with fish leather.
The goal is to produce a shoe with a low carbon footprint, with a prolonged life.
By exploiting residue from local salmon farms, the Norskin fish leather is a local and more sustainable alternative to cows leather.
The team will be working on the project of one year with the aim to create a shoe for the year 2024.
