The companies have signed an Early Service Agreement (ESA), under which SMS Group will supply technology, equipment and process automation for the new plant.

The new cold rolling mill is part of the new fossil-free steel mill, a so-called mini-mill, which will be built in Luleå to replace the old blast furnace.

“SSAB and SMS group have a long history of successful cooperation. We are pleased that we have agreed with SMS group to supply process equipment for our new cold rolling complex in Luleå,” says Carl Orrling, newly appointed Technical Manager at SSAB.

The conversion in Luleå will reduce Sweden’s carbon dioxide emissions by about 7%.

SMS Group has a turnover of approximately EUR 3.4 billion.
