In yesterday’s address to a joint session of Congress, U.S. President Donald Trump reaffirmed his long-standing interest in Greenland, making one of his strongest statements yet on the territory. Remarking on his goals for the Arctic nation, Trump declared; “One way or another, we’re going to get it.”

Trump’s comments suggest that his administration, will continue to push for U.S. control of Greenland, echoing his previous attempts to acquire the autonomous territory from Denmark.

Greenland’s Strategic Importance

During his speech, Trump remarked on the strategic significance to the U.S.

“We need Greenland for national security and even international security,” he told Congress.

He also framed U.S. involvement in Greenland as an opportunity for its people, pledging that American leadership would bring economic prosperity.

“We will keep you safe, we will make you rich, and together, we will take Greenland to heights like you have never thought possible before,” he said, aiming his words at the people of Greenland.
