Press release from Dulles International Airport
Low-cost carrier from Washington to Europe to launch in April 2023
The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority welcomes Play Airlines to Washington Dulles International Airport. Play will offer nonstop service between Washington, D.C., and its hub at Keflavik international Airport (KEF) in Reykjavik, Iceland, starting April 26, 2023. The new flights will operate daily on Airbus A321 and A320 aircraft with 180 seats or greater. Customers can now book flights on Play to Iceland and beyond to Paris, Berlin, Madrid, Brussels, Dublin and more destinations.
“As the international gateway to the Washington, D.C., capital region, Dulles International is committed to offering a wide variety of airline products for our local community to access global travel,” said Paul Bobson, vice president for Airline Business Development for the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority. “As a low-cost airline operating flights to Iceland and the rest of Europe, Play will add significant capacity in the low-cost international market segment.”
Play CEO Birgir Jónsson said, “Play has had a strong summer since the beginning in the United States this year, and adding IAD is an important move for our growth in the region. Washington, D.C., is a key destination for both European tourists and American travelers, and expanding our service with flights from IAD will strengthen Play’s presence while giving passengers convenient and affordable flights.”
With the launch of this service, Play will become Washington Dulles International Airport’s 36th airline and its only low-cost carrier flying to Europe – offering travelers nonstop access to Reykjavik and easy 1-stop connections to over a dozen European destinations served by Play.
