🇸🇪 Nordic Hydrogen Route – Bothnian Bay (NHR) has been granted €29.4 million EU support
Nordic Hydrogen Route – Bothnian Bay (NHR) has been granted 29.4 million euros in co-financing from European Union Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) to support the next development phase of the project.
NHR consortium (Gasgrid Finland and Nordion Energi) applied for support in October 2024. The CEF (Connecting Europe Facility) Committee for EU energy projects decided on the granted projects on 29 January 2025 based on a proposal from the European Commission. The competition for infrastructure funding in the EU is fierce, and the decision is a great testament to the quality of the NHR project and showcases its potential to contribute to the EU’s energy self-sufficiency targets and to support the transition to green energy.
“The €29.4 million funding now awarded will allow the project to proceed with the feasibility phase activities. The NHR project is a key infrastructure for enabling the clean industrial transition in Northern Europe, especially in the Baltic Sea region, where it will support regional clean industrial transition and economic development. This decision demonstrates the quality of our project and its potential to contribute to sustainable development and energy independence in the EU”, says Erkka Saario, VP, Large infrastructure Projects, Gasgrid vetyverkot Oy.
“This is great news. We are thankful for the support that we have received from the Swedish and Finnish governments in the process. NHR will be an important enabler for the transition to a more secure, energy independent and green Europe, and it will create new opportunities for industries in Northern Sweden and Finland to become more sustainable and competitive, says Björn Santana Arvidsson, deputy managing director Nordion Energi H2.
The co-financing from CEF will be used in the NHR project to execute feasibility and basic design phase activities. This will include selecting engineering partners for both countries, technical feasibility and basic design studies, the selection of permit partners and starting the first permitting activities. The focus will also be on the commercial maturity with relevant stakeholders in the region.

Nordic Hydrogen Route – Bothnian Bay (NHR)
The Nordic Hydrogen Route is an initiative between Gasgrid and Nordion Energi to accelerate the creation of a hydrogen economy by building up cross-border hydrogen infrastructure in Bothnian Bay region and an open hydrogen market by 2030. The aim of the Nordic Hydrogen Route is to drive decarbonization, support regional green industrialization, economic development, and European energy independence. The companies seek to develop a network of pipelines that would effectively transport energy from producers to consumers to ensure they have access to an open, reliable, and safe hydrogen market. The project received EU PCI status on 8 April 2024 and is currently in the feasibility study phase.
Gasgrid is the transmission system operator responsible for gas transmission, the transmission system in Finland, and the builder of the national hydrogen infrastructure.
